DETOX
What is detox?
Detox, short for detoxification, generally refers to the removal of toxic substances from the body. A detox diet is a dietary regimen involving a change in consumption habits in an attempt to "detoxify" the body by removal of "toxins" or other contaminants.
There is no sound evidence that we need to ‘detox’ or that following a short-term detox program will increase the elimination of toxins from your body. Our bodies are well-equipped with self-cleansing mechanisms, and detoxification occurs on a continual basis in the body – the lungs, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal tract, skin and immune system all play a part in effectively removing or eliminating toxins.
However, symptoms like bloating and fatigue may be an indication of an unhealthy lifestyle, or a lack of vital nutrients because of poor eating habits. For example bloating and flatulence can result from a lack of fibre.
How does detox contribute to our health and wellbeing?
The idea that you can pollute your body as much as you like all year and then undo the damage in days unfortunately doesn’t work. Nevertheless, people who have followed a detox program – generally by following a sensible healthy eating and exercise plan – report that they have more energy and feel healthier.
There are positive aspects of a detox program, such as improving our diet and lifestyle which our health would benefit from. Try the following on a daily basis:
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat more fruit, vegetables and wholegrains
- Consume caffeine and alcohol in moderation
- Stop smoking
