Kathy Usic
Accredited Practising Dietitian
Kathy Usic is an Accredited Practising Dietitian with over 25 years experience in nutrition marketing and public health. She holds a Bachelor of Education and Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics and is currently a Nutrition Manager in George Weston Foods' Baking Division.
Prior to joining George Weston Foods, Kathy held senior positions at several large FMCG companies including Campbell Arnott's and Goodman Fielder. She has lectured in Nutrition and Health Studies at the University of Sydney, and also worked at the NSW School Canteen Association as a nutritionist and Executive Officer - where she was responsible for developing and implementing national nutritional guidelines for school canteens.
Prior to this, Kathy worked as a Paediatric Dietitian at the Children's Hospital at Westmead and Camperdown. In 1989, she joined the National Heart Foundation as a Project Officer where she helped implement various public health nutrition programs – including the successful Tick Food Program.
Before joining the Heart Foundation and undertaking further study in Dietetics, Kathy worked as a secondary and tertiary teacher in Victoria and NSW - teaching physical education and home economics. Combining her interest in nutrition and good food, Kathy took a break from teaching and opened up a café known as 'Pelicans Fine Foods' in Balmain in 1988. Kathy has also been the nutrition editor of Practical Parenting and a food writer for Time Inc publications (now Pacific Magazine).
A mother of 4 children, Kathy understands the demands of today's busy world and the complexity of food issues. She is a passionate nutrition marketer and believes that credible nutrition messages can help strike the right balance between good food and healthy lifestyle.
Would you like expert nutrition advice?
Look no further than an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). An APD can provide you with personalised advice to give you the confidence to eat in a way that is best for you. APDs are university-qualified experts in nutrition and dietetics and are committed to the Dietitians Association of Australia's (DAA) Code of Professional Conduct, continuing professional development and providing quality services.
To find an APD, search the 'Find an APD' feature by clicking on the APD logo or call 1800 812 942.
What are Accredited Nutritionists (AN)?
Accredited Nutritionists (AN) are tertiary qualified nutrition professionals that have expertise in a range of nutrition services including public health nutrition, community health and tertiary education related to nutrition, but are different to APDs as they are not qualified to provide individual dietary counselling therapy and medical nutrition therapy. APDs can choose to use the APD and/or AN credential.
What’s the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
There are no rules governing the use of terms 'Dietitian' and 'Nutritionist' and they may be used by people with very limited nutrition qualifications.
To make sure you are receiving expert advice from a qualified professional always look for the APD or AN credential.
