What are wholegrains?
Wholegrains contain all three parts of the grain – the bran, germ and endosperm.
Common wholegrain products include oats, popcorn, brown rice, whole wheat flour, sprouted grains and whole wheat bread.
How do wholegrains contribute to our health and wellbeing?
Wholegrains are a rich source of dietary fibre and nutrients because they contain all the natural goodness of the entire grain that is, the bran, endosperm and germ1.
If the grain has been processed (e.g., cracked, crushed, rolled, extruded, and/or cooked) but still contains all the components, it is considered a wholegrain as it delivers the same rich balance of nutrients that are found in the original intact grain. Therefore wholemeal flour, which contains all the components of the grain, is considered a wholegrain.
Wholegrains offer a number of health benefits compared to more refined grains1:
- Wholegrains are an excellent source of carbohydrate, dietary fibre, protein and are a good source of many B-group vitamins, vitamin E, and a number of minerals – especially iron, zinc, magnesium and phosphorus.
It is widely known that wholegrain foods are beneficial for your heart, digestive system and help to keep you in good shape. A diet high in wholegrains is associated with a lower Body Mass Index (BMI), waist circumference and risk of being overweight.
How can you increase your intake of wholegrains?
