Digestive Balance

Bürgen® Rye Bread

Many of the factors that can influence your lifestyle – such as the food you eat, the amount of exercise you get and your level of stress – can also affect your digestive health. Exercising, drinking plenty of water throughout the day and consuming high fibre foods, such as rye, as part of a healthy diet will help to maintain regularity.

Working towards good bowel health can be as easy as making small changes to your diet by regularly consuming wholegrain rye products such as Bürgen® Rye Bread which is proven to improve digestive health.

Bürgen® Rye Bread is packed with natural ingredients including Rye-Plus™, containing fibre and prebiotics (resistant starch) that are beneficial for digestive health1.

To further its commitment to improving the digestive health of Australians, Bürgen® Rye supported an Expert Roundtable discussion, held at CSIRO, Sydney. The aim of the Roundtable was to provide evidence-based, practical and realistic recommendations to assist Australians in managing their digestive and bowel health.

What factors affect digestive health?

A high intake of fatty energy dense foods and not enough fibre, fruits, and vegetables can all contribute to digestive system difficulties. Poor eating habits, such as eating too quickly or skipping meals, can also be part of the problem.

However, many digestive problems can be prevented through maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following three key steps:

  1. Dietary fibre: Consume foods high in dietary fibre including wholegrain breads and cereals, fruits, vegetables and legumes (such as baked beans, lentils and chickpeas). An adequate daily intake for fibre is around 25-30g.
  2. Keep up the fluids: It’s important to make sure you are drinking enough water, especially when you increase the amount of fibre in your diet. Aim for 2 litres of fluids per day.
  3. Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
