Iron is a mineral that is used by the body to make haemoglobin, part of the red blood cells that transport oxygen in the body.

How does iron contribute to our health and wellbeing?

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrition problems in the world mainly affecting women and young children. If your iron or haemoglobin count is low, this often results in a lack of energy which may prevent you from performing everyday tasks well. A lack of iron can also lower your immunity and leave you prone to many infections.

How can you increase your iron intake?

Red meat is one of the best sources of iron and its iron is well absorbed by the body, being in the form of haem iron.

Wholegrain cereals, some vegetables, legumes, nuts and eggs also carry much iron, but it is non-haem iron and not as well absorbed as that from meat. The trick is to eat a variety of foods from both haem and non-haem sources everyday to ensure that you are getting enough iron.

Enhance iron absorption

Adding a glass of orange juice or some tomato or capsicum to a salad filling in a Bürgen® Bread sandwich may help enhance iron absorption in the meal.

Omega 3 fats are polyunsaturated fats that are found in significant quantities in several plants and plant oils (e.g. canola, linseed, soy and walnut) and in even greater quantities in many varieties of seafood.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that omega 3 fats are beneficial in at least three areas of human health: heart health, inflammation, and development of vision and brain function in babies1. Omega 3s are essential to human health and needed throughout all life stages, from pregnancy, infancy, childhood and extending through to adulthood.

How can you increase your intake of Omega 3?

  • Increase consumption of fish. The Heart Foundation recommends consumption of at least two or three fish meals per week. Tip: Add canned tuna or salmon to sandwiches and salads.
  • Choose Soy and Linseed products such as Bürgen® Soy-Lin® bread, crackers and cereals.
  • Add LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and almond meal) to breakfast cereals, diced fruit or fruit smoothies.
  • Consume a handful of nuts such as walnuts as a snack.

Phytoestrogens

Phytoestrogens are oestrogen-like substances that come from plants. There are two main types of phytoestrogens, Isoflavones and Lignans.

Benefits of Isoflavones 1:

  • Bones: Growing evidence suggests that consuming soy may help in maintaining healthy bones as some studies have shown it tends to reduce the amount of calcium lost from the bone.
  • There is limited but growing evidence that isoflavones may help maintain breast and prostate health.
  • Bürgen® Soy-Lin® Bread contains Isoflavones, found in soy.

Benefits of Lignans 2,3:

  • Lignans are phytoestrogens which also act in the body as antioxidants. They are converted by the beneficial bacteria in our colon into enterolignans, enterodiol and enterolactone.
  • There is limited but growing evidence that enterolignans help to maintain health and wellbeing, including helping to maintain heart health, a healthy digestive system and breast and prostate health.
  • Bürgen® Soy-Lin® and Bürgen® Rye Bread both contain Lignans found in linseed and rye.

How can you increase your intake of phytoestrogens?

  • Consume soy products such as soy milk, tofu and soy and breads containing soy such as Bürgen® Soy-Lin®.
  • Add LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds) to smoothies and diced fruit;
  • Consume rye based products such as Bürgen® Rye.
